Mr. Robot star Rami Malek can count Iron Man among his friends.

Actor Robert Downey Jr., who recently visited Malek on the set of Mr. Robot, sat down with the rising star for Interview magazine’s August issue.

Their conversation touched on Malek’s portrayal of the unstable Elliot Alderson in the popular USA Network drama, their affinity for New York City, and Downey’s set visit earlier this summer — outing the actors as pals.

“That was amazing,” Malek told Downey in the interview. “You turned me into a hero when you came to set. I’m not kidding. They were like, ‘You know him?’ ‘How do you know him?'”

And once their friendship became public, Malek noticed a change on and off set. “I knew it was very cool to know you, but the world started paying me more attention on that day on set,” he said. “Maybe I elaborated on our relationship too much and started fantasizing it was more than it actually was. No, I just told them how close we were and that we hang out, we celebrate holidays together, we watch movies together, all of which is true!”

In an interview with EW last month, Malek praised Downey, calling him “a role model for any actor.”
