Kaley Cuoco apologized on Tuesday after inciting outrage by posting a photo of her dogs sitting on an American flag.

“I would like to comment on a photo I posted yesterday, that has caused lots of controversy,” Cuoco wrote on Instagram. “First off, please know, I have the utmost respect for my country. I am a proud American in every sense of the word. I understand the American flag stands for our freedom and represents American heroes, past and present.”

She added that posting the photo of her “sweet dogs posing on an American flag” was a “mistake.”

“I sincerely apologize to anyone that has been offended by my previous post,” Cuoco wrote. “This is no way reflects my feelings toward what the American flag represents. Living in the public eye, can be extremely difficult at times. Every mistake and every imperfection is amplified. I am not perfect. I am a proud American, today, tomorrow, always.”

The offending image, which Cuoco deleted off her account, was slammed by commenters, with one writing, per Fox News, “Showing disrespect for the flag, it should never touch the ground, or let your pet stand on it!”

But after Cuoco posted her apology, many commenters on Instagram defended the Big Bang Theory star and took issue with those who criticized Cuoco in the first place. “Dude, it’s a picture that was cute,” wrote one commenter. “I would have put it up of my dogs. [P]eople get to worked up about things [nowadays]. [D]on’t sweat it, we still love you.”
