Over the course of his decades-long career, Richard Linklater has amassed an eclectic resume of dozens of films. But for the first time ever, the Oscar-nominated writer and director is playing a different role: documentary subject.
The upcoming documentary Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny chronicles Linklater’s path from DIY director to critically-lauded auteur as he reflects on some of his most beloved films, from Slacker and Before Sunrise to Boyhood and Dazed and Confused.
“I can go on forever about the films I’ve made and my cast and all that; it’s such a weird reversal of perspective to have a film with you as the subject — it’s a little unnerving,” Linklater told EW earlier this year during the Sundance Film Festival.
Documentary directors Louis Black and Karen Bernstein conducted extensive interviews with Linklater, his family, and his collaborators (including Ethan Hawke, Jack Black, and Matthew McConaughey), as well as spending time on the set of his latest film, Everybody Wants Some!! The result is an in-depth look at Linklater’s entire filmography and how he built a career that’s part Hollywood acclaim, part Austin DIY.
After premiering earlier this year at Sundance, Dream is Destiny will hit theaters and VOD on Aug. 5. Watch the documentary’s trailer above.
