Cinderella is getting a modern makeover in Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits.
EW has the exclusive first look at the contemporary musical tale, which stars Disney Channel actress Sofia Carson (Descendants, Adventures in Babysitting) as Tessa Golding, whose evil stepmother Divine, played by Academy Award nominee Jennifer Tilly (Bullets Over Broadway), has forced Tessa to accompany her and her daughters on vacation as their assistant.
The stepsisters are auditioning for “Cinderella,” a live musical performance opposite Reed West (Thomas Law, Eastenders), a notorious pop star. “You’re here to help Athena and Olympia focus on one thing: winning the lead role,” Divine barks at Tessa in the trailer. But Tessa dreams of performing, and with the help of her makeup artist-turned-fairy godmother, she pulls a Hannah Montana, donning a blond wig and landing the lead role in disguise. Can she juggle her dual identities and keep her big secret?
A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits is the fourth installment in the A Cinderella Story series, which began with the 2004 Hilary Duff film. Another Cinderella Story, starring Selena Gomez, followed in 2008, and A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song, starring Lucy Hale, was released in 2011. If the Shoe Fits marks the directorial debut of Michelle Johnston, who choreographed and co-produced the first three installments.
“The Cinderella fairytale is a classic for a reason,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s vice president of family and animation marketing. “It is an inspirational story that has captivated audiences over and over again, so we are delighted to bring a fresh, new spin to this timeless fairytale.”
The movie will be released on DVD Aug. 16 before airing on Freeform (formerly known as ABC Family) in November. See the exclusive trailer above.
