A 23-year-old man was in the custody of police after he allegedly repeatedly stabbed a man at a movie theater in Santa Rosa, California, during a screening of The Shallows, a horror movie starring Blake Lively.
The 21-year-old victim is in critical condition after the alleged attack around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to a statement by Santa Rosa police, the suspect allegedly approached the victim from behind and stabbed him multiple times before running out of the Roxy Theater. Authorities believe the attack was random and unprovoked.
The victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening stab wounds.
Witnesses gave a description of the suspect as black with a full beard and dreadlocks. He was detained by police close to the theater minutes later. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
The alleged attacker had no ID, although he did give officers his name and age and told police he was from the East Coast.
“We are still trying to figure out who he is,” Sgt. Josh Ludtke told The Press Democrat.
Officers recovered a weapon at the theater.
The Press Democrat reports that police believe the attack may be related to Monday’s fatal stabbing in Santa Rosa of 32-year-old Cirak Tesfazgi. Tesfazgi was stabbed 50 times in a doorway where he occasionally slept.
“Based on the randomness of the act, the brutality of the act, certainly he’s a person we’re looking into as a suspect,” Ludtke told the outlet.
Last summer, two women were killed and at least nine people were injured when a gunman opened fire during a screening of the movie Trainwreck in Lafayette, Louisiana. The gunman, identified as John Russell Houser, died after taking his own life.
