Everybody Wants Some!!: Richard Linklater shares his alternate '80s soundtrack

Almost every detail in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! feels like it came from a 1980 time capsule, from the haircuts and short-shorts to the pop culture references and slang. But the thing that truly cements Linklater’s latest comedy as an ode to all things early ‘80s is the eclectic soundtrack, ranging from The Knack’s “My Sharona” and Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker” to Devo’s “Whip It” and The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight.” Even the movie’s title gets its name from Van Halen’s 1980 classic.

In all, there are 16 songs on the film’s official soundtrack, but when Linklater was making the movie, he assembled a playlist of nearly 200 tracks that captured the ‘80s adolescent vibe he was going for. Here, he shares an exclusive list of some of the many tracks that didn’t make the final cut, a list that will premiere Friday on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio show.

Starring Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, and Temple Baker as members of a Texas college baseball team, Everybody Wants Some!! is out now on iTunes and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on July 12.
