Donald Trump has interacted with a great many celebrities — even a child Daniel Radcliffe — but only Aubrey Plaza was dressed in an elf costume.
Last year, Plaza tweeted a photo of herself, in costume, alongside a smiling Trump. On Tuesday’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actress explained how the picture became a reality.
“I think I was around 19, 20, I was living in New York, and my job was to dress up as that character,” Plaza told host Stephen Colbert. As she recalled, there was an event at FAO Schwarz in New York, and Trump was set to attend.
“My boss said the only thing you need to do tonight is get a picture with Donald Trump. That’s all I need you to do. Do it or you’re fired,” Plaza said.
And do it she did, though it wasn’t easy at first: “He kept shooing me away. He didn’t want the picture,” Plaza said of Trump. “I finally put my creepy elf arm around him and got that picture.”
As for what she thinks of Trump now? “If I knew then what I knew now I would have just tackled him to the ground in that moment,” Plaza said as the Late Show crowd cheered.
