Former Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman, who left the series last year, has officially passed the torch to the Doctor’s newest companion Pearl Mackie, who boards the TARDIS next season. Coleman sent flowers to Mackie to celebrate the newcomer’s first day of filming on the long-running sci-fi adventure series.
Mackie posted a picture of the bouquet on Twitter, writing: “What a beautifully thoughtful gift. From one companion to another.”
Coleman played Clara Oswald for three years opposite Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor and Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor before departing the series last fall. In April, the BBC announced Pearl Mackie as the Doctor’s newest time-traveling pal Bill, who will debut in next season’s opening episode, airing in 2017. The actress is the latest in a long line of companions, which in recent years has included Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful), Freema Agyeman (Sense8), Catherine Tate (The Office), and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy).
Last week, the BBC revealed British comedian Matt Lucas (Bridesmaids, Little Britain) will join Capaldi and Mackie for the show’s 10th season, airing on BBC America in 2017. The new season will be preceded by a one-off special this Christmas.
