Activision Blizzard Studios is taking the characters of Skylanders from video games to TV in their debut animated series, set to stream later this year on Netflix — and EW has an exclusive look (above) at a photo from the upcoming project.
Skylanders Academy, based on the $3 billion video game and toy franchise that has sold over 250 million figures globally since launching in 2011, will follow a group of heroes with elemental skills and personalities who protect the Skylands universe from villains. Justin Long, Ashley Tisdale, Jonathan Banks, and Norm MacDonald are lending their voices to the series’ main characters. Additional voice actors include Susan Sarandon, Parker Posey, Catherine O’Hara, Daniel Wu, and Bobcat Goldthwait.
Activision Blizzard Studios’ two-season deal with Netflix marks the brand’s first foray into television production, the studio said. The company’s other interactive titles include Call of Duty, Destiny, World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and King’s Candy Crush.
Skylanders Academy was produced under the supervision of showrunner Eric Rogers (Futurama). Activision Blizzard Studios co-presidents Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk are executive producing alongside Emmy winner Sander Schwartz (The Batman, Justice League: The New Frontier).
“Over the last five years, millions of families around the world have welcomed Skylanders characters into their homes. Now, they’ll be able to watch their favorite characters come to life on Netflix,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, via press release. “We couldn’t have found a better home for Skylanders Academy and look forward to sharing our extraordinary characters with Netflix audiences around the world.”
Skylanders Academy is expected to debut on Netflix this fall.
