Presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has made numerous controversial statements over the course of his campaign, but the former reality television host still managed to shock many people with his response to this weekend’s mass shooting at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida. On Sunday, Trump posted a tweet that read, “Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!”
When Fox News host Bill O’Reilly came on The Late Show on Monday night, host Stephen Colbert asked him about Trump’s response.
“He’s using this terrorism issue to bolster his popularity,” O’Reilly said.
O’Reilly and Colbert, frequent sparring partners, went back and forth on whether Trump’s “grandstanding” was beyond the pale for politicians and how Trump’s response compared to Hillary Clinton’s remarks in the wake of the massacre.
“Here’s the difference: Trump is bringing a robust ‘I’m gonna get these guys’ attitude to the table. Mrs. Clinton is bringing a more nuanced situation,” O’Reilly said. He later added, “It’s political advantage to Trump on this one. He has the advantage on this one, and he wants to be president, so he’s gonna use it.”
“That is true,” Colbert admitted.
