Zayn canceled his set at Saturday’s Summertime Ball because of anxiety, he revealed in a Twitter post.
“Unfortunately my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me,” he said. “With the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career.”
Summertime Ball takes place at London’s Wembley Stadium, a venue that holds 90,000 people. Since going solo, Zayn has only performed short sets at a handful of events including Los Angeles’ Wango Tango concert and the iHeartRadio Music Awards.
“I cannot apologise enough but I want to be honest with everyone who has patiently waited to see me,” he continued. “I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I’ve let down today.”
Model Gigi Hadid responded to Zayn’s tweet with her own note, where she praised her boyfriend for how he handled the situation. “I’ve seen the battles you go through and the way you fight to get to a place that allows you to get up there for your fans,” she wrote. “Your bravery in those times makes me proud, but your honesty last night proved what you’re all about, being real.”
