Hamilton: Daveed Diggs' #BARS workshop turns movie scenes into rap songs

Posted on

Uma Thurman’s Kill Bill assassin sounds even more vindictive when rapping from her coffin.

Daveed Diggs, of Hamilton fame, and his collaborator Rafael Casal hosted the “First Mixtape Musical Medley” — the culmination of their six-session musical theater workshop, #BARS.

The workshop’s 12 participants each selected a scene from a film, TV show, or comic strip. Most chose from the first two categories, but Casal and Diggs went full Calvin and Hobbes, respectively, to launch the show. Oh, and it all happened in one take.

The actors — some professional, some newcomers — picked more recent comedies like Mean Girls and The Devil Wears Prada to adapt, but one went for a solo Singin’ in the Rain reworking. John Hughes films made two appearances with a funny Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and a closing homage to The Breakfast Club.
