Devonte Hynes has proven himself to be a pioneering, free-thinking voice across various genres of music, releasing indie rock records as Lightspeed Companion, producing pop songs for artists like Carly Rae Jepsen and Solange Knowles, and putting out electronic-influenced funk songs under the moniker Blood Orange. Now, he’s preparing for to drop his third album under that name.
Freetown Sound is due out July 1 and is Hynes’ first release in three years follows Blood Orange’s Cupid Deluxe. Hynes shared the new collection’s cover art, which shows a man and woman embracing on the edge of a bed, via Twitter. In a statement, Hynes revealed that Freetown Sound is a very personal album for the singer/songwriter.
“I have just finished making an album about my life, my upbringing, being black in England, being black in America… my movement to this country at the age of 21, the same age that my mother moved from Guyana to London, and my father from Sierra Leone to London,” Hynes said. “Freetown Sound, the name of my album, is taken from Freetown where my father was born.”
