On July 5, 1973, Jerry Garcia played a show with his friend and mentor Merl Saunders to the 200-person capacity room at the fabled Lion’s Club in San Anselmo, California. Garcia credited Saunders with inspiring him to work covers into his sets, and that night the two worked through Smokey Robinson’s “Second That Emotion,” Arthur Crudup’s “That’s Alright, Mama” (popularized by Elvis Presley), The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” and Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”—a clip of which EW is excited to premiere today.

All became staples for the Jerry Garcia Band and will be featured on the next installment of the acclaimed Garcia Live series. The 3-disc set is due out June 24 and will feature the legend and Saunders’ entire concert from that evening, which also includes “My Funny Valentine,” J.J. Cole’s “After Midnight” (popularized by Eric Clapton), and more.

The iconic frontman’s career spanned more than three decades but 1973 was an especially fertile year. Just five days after this show, the two musicians would record their famous Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders: Live at Keystone releases in Berkeley, CA. The group playing together (Garcia, Saunders, bassist John Kahn) would soon form the Legion of Mary, which also included Elvis Presley’s drummer Ron Tutt and saxophonist Martin Fierro, and Garcia was also digging deeper into bluegrass as a member of Old & In The Way, his band with David Grisman and Peter Rowan. And the Dead were about to head to Watkins Glen, NY where they, along with the Allman Brothers and the Band would play at what would become the largest single day concert in U.S. history for over half a million people on July 28 of that year.

“How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” is streaming below, with full track listing for the collection following.
