Indianapolis 500: Lady Gaga rides with Mario Andretti

Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated singer Lady Gaga has taken her recent “comeback” promotional tour from this year’s Super Bowl to the Indianapolis 500, where the pop icon took a ride Sunday with race car driver (and Indy 500 champion) Mario Andretti.

Gaga kicked off the 100th Running of the Indy 500 with a surprise appearance, waving to fans from the backseat of Andretti’s two-person vehicle. Though she’s known for her boundary-pushing outfits and innovative style, the songwriter added a new ensemble to her ever-growing repertoire, dressing for safety in a bulky helmet and racing suit as she sped around the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Gaga’s involvement in the Indy 500’s opening festivities reportedly came after fellow musician Keith Urban canceled his scheduled appearance due to a back injury. “I have yet to meet her, personally,” Andretti told reporters, per USA Today, of Gaga’s last-minute involvement. He noted the 30-year-old would join him as he lead the pace car for three laps around the track before the official start of the race. Andretti added: “She decided to do it, and all of a sudden here we are … She’s going to distract me quite a bit, actually. I hope I can just look ahead while I’m driving.”

In recent months, Gaga has posted several automobile-themed photos to Instagram, leading some fans to speculate that her next album, which she’s currently working on, will have some sort of vehicular theme.
