EW’s latest cover star Nick Jonas has a packed summer planned. The 23-year-old pop star releases his third solo album, Last Year Was Complicated, on June 10, and embarks on a massive U.S. tour with Demi Lovato on June 29. But Jonas recently took time out to share the stories behind some of his hugest hits with EW.
“‘Champagne Problems’ is one of the most personal songs on the record,” says Jonas in the video above, alluding to the introspective themes on Complicated. “It’s funny, it sounds like a party jam but it reality it’s about something pretty sad.” The song documents Jonas’ split with a lover — and the role a bottle of champagne played.
Jonas also looks back on last year’s smash “Levels” and the creative process that went into it. “It helps to have good friends, people that understand your sound and what you’re going for,” Jonas said. “I think part of my job as a creative person, as well, is to curate my sound and make sure that there are moments where I’m never shutting down inspiration from other places.”
