Free State of Jones is coming out firing.
The new trailer for the Matthew McConaughey-starred Civil War movie turns its attention to the battle and rebellion against the Confederates. While the first look amped up the drama, the most recent look sees the rifles blazing as McConnaughey’s Newt Knight seeks to preserve freedom.
“It ain’t just for us,” he says. “Black, white, rich, poor: it’s for everybody.”

Knight led other white farmers and local slaves to establish the Free State of Jones, in Jones County, Mississippi. After the war, Knight married a former slave of his grandfather’s named Rachel — played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw — and established a unique mixed-race community in the post-war South.
