Britain's Got Talent: Say Something performed by mother and son

Britain's Got Talent

A mother and son duo wowed the judges with an emotional rendition of A Great Big World’s single “Say Something” (which featured Christina Aguilera) on Saturday night’s episode of Britain’s Got Talent, bringing the audience to its feet for a standing ovation following the emotional cover.

Welsh mother Mel, 44, took the stage with her 15-year-old son, Jamie, in front of judges Alesha Dixon, David Walliams, Amanda Holden, and former American Idol judge Simon Cowell, revealing that the pair had only been singing together for a couple of weeks prior to auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent.

“To perform onstage with my son is going to be one of the proudest moments of my life,” Mel said ahead of launching into their version of “Say Something,” a track which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013 ahead of being certified 5-times Platinum.

Following the performance, Simon Cowell couldn’t stop grinning (a rarity!) as Mel wiped away tears. Cowell revealed he was initially skeptical of the pair, as he believed Mel, who sings in nursing homes for a living, would overpower her young son’s voice. “You were very cool in the way that you let Jamie take the lead,” Cowell said. “You allowed it to be his song, but your harmonies actually improved the song, I thought.”
