While there are several spin-off X-Men movies in the works at the moment (Wolverine 3, Deadpool 2, Gambit), the next ensemble film hasn’t been officially announced. But if and when it does happen, could it focus on one of the most beloved and famous arcs in the X-Men comics — Jean Grey’s tragic evolution into the villainous Dark Phoenix?
Writer-producer Simon Kinberg caught flak for the slapdash way that transition was depicted in X-Men: The Last Stand. When audiences see X-Men: Apocalypse, the focus of this week’s EW cover story, fans will notice the seeds are planted for a do-over. (Hint: Jean gets real warm at one point.) Could this be the next X-Men movie? Teases Kinberg, “I definitely would love to take another stab at the Dark Phoenix story.”
Adds Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, who plays Jean in Apocalypse, “The seeds of Phoenix definitely are planted in there. She can’t control her powers unless she either fully stops them or lets them all loose, and that’s kind of Phoenix. I think in future movies to come we’ll definitely see a bit more of that.”
