Phoebe Ryan is taking it back to high school with her new song “Boyz n Poizn,” premiering here on EW today.
“It’s a throwback windows-down, cruising-really-slowly-in-your-car song,” the “Chronic” singer tells EW of the track. “You think about those classic hip-hop drum sounds, when you’re in high school and you’re dumb and first getting your license. You’re like ‘I’m going to take my parents’ car and cruise around the neighborhood so everyone knows I can drive.’”
The inspiration for the track came while Ryan—who previously scored the Taylor Swift seal of approval and lit up the internet with an R. Kelly-Miguel mash-up —was joking around in the studio with producer pals Mike Del Rio (of the band Powers) and Kyle Shearer. “I was telling them about my stupid love life, and they were like, ‘Wow, you really just destroy ‘em,’” she says. “We got on this whole black widow vibe.”
Though there’s no release date for Ryan’s debut album just yet—“We’re taking our time making sure everything sounds great,” she says—the singer is embarking on a summer tour with synth-pop duo Cardiknox after opening for Charlie Puth earlier this year.
“Getting to watch Charlie perform every night and see how consistently good he was made me go, ‘Oh, you’ve got to bring it, this is your headline show, you have to give your all,’” Ryan says. “I mean, duh, that makes sense, I’m supposed to do that. But when you see it in action, it really inspires you.”
