Merle Haggard’s final song, “Kern River Blues” dropped this week, a little more than a month after the country legend died of complications from pneumonia.
Haggard recorded the song in the months before his death, after canceling a couple of tours due to his illness, according to a statement from the singer’s family on his website.
“Kern River Blues,” written while Haggard was in the hospital, is about his memories of leaving Bakersfield in the late 1970s. The song is available for purchase on Haggard’s website and iTunes, and 10 percent of all gross proceeds of sales will go to homeless charities.
