Director Gareth Edwards has dropped out of directing Godzilla 2, EW has learned.
Edwards, who directed the Star Wars anthology film Rogue One for Disney, helmed the 2014 Godzilla reboot, which featured Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, and Bryan Cranston in lead roles. A sequel was soon announced from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., slated for June 8, 2018. But just this week, Warner Bros. bumped Godzilla 2 back to March 22, 2019.
Godzilla 2 is part of a monster movie line-up that also includes Kong: Skull Island, hitting theaters on March 10, 2017 with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and Samuel L. Jackson. Godzilla vs. King Kong will bow a few years later on May 29, 2020.
Deadline was the first to report the news of Edwards’ departure.
