“I’m just a girl who went to Hollywood with my son, $700, and a dream,” Henson said in a statement on Simon & Schuster’s website. “There were some detours along the way, some heartache, and a whole lot of hustle. My family, friends, and fans always keep it real with me. Know that I’m going to keep it real with you. Check out my story. I hope you laugh with me and cry with me and maybe get a little bit inspired.”
The publisher shared that the memoir will include stories about Henson’s father, a Vietnam veteran, and her mother, who survived violence at home and on the streets. Henson will also comment on her education at Howard University, how she views single motherhood as a gift rather than a burdern, and the struggles that come along with being a black actress.
Around the Way Girl arrives Oct. 11. See Henson’s Instagram post below.
