New parents Chrissy Teigen and John Legend got into a bit of a social media firestorm recently when they were photographed going on a date night just over a week after Teigen gave birth to their daughter, Luna. But Desi Lydic is here to stand up for them: In a Daily Show segment earlier this week, Lydic explained how to deal with mom-shaming, using Teigen and Legend’s experience as an example.
Commenters on Instagram and Twitter accused Teigen of letting a nanny raise her newborn, a criticism Lydic took issue with. “You’re worried about the quality of John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s child care? It’s not like they’re getting their nanny off Craigslist. They’re rich celebrities. They could get Mary Poppins to watch their baby, as in literally call Julie Andrews, get her to come out of retirement to babysit in character as Mary Poppins,” Lydic says in the bit.
Legend clearly approved of the segement defending his family and celebrated his daughter’s Daily Show debut by tweeting out the video along with a disclaimer: “FYI, we only have Mary Poppins on weekends,” he joked. The singer also lamented that “dad-shaming” isn’t a thing. “When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn’t have to take it all,” he said. “We’ll split it.”
