Scandal star Joe Morton is a guest on Tuesday’s episode of The Daily Show, but first, he shared some in-character, pre-show advice with host Trevor Noah.

Comedy Central shared an intense (yet comedic) video of Morton and Noah meeting before the taping. It starts as a friendly chat, but when the light dims, the cruel side of Morton’s Scandal character, Rowan Pope, emerges — as if he’s laying into his on-screen daughter, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington).

“You think you’re ready to star the show? You are not ready to start the show,” he tells Noah. “You’re barely ready to start a sentence.”

Noah doesn’t know how to react, and Morton continues his tirade.

“I have done nothing but protect you. I’ve eaten fire, I’ve met the devil. I am the dragon, you are a princess,” he says. “I make kings, I crush dreams, and anything I leave behind is left smoldering on the ground — a mere memory, a dark mark on the earth.”

Ouch.

The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m. ET on Comedy Central. Watch Morton in the new promo above.
