Michael Shannon may be headed to the supernatural realm with Guillermo del Toro.

EW can confirm that the Man of Steel and Boardwalk Empire actor is in talks for a role in the Pan’s Labyrinth director’s mysterious Fox Searchlight film, an otherworldly romance set against the backdrop of Cold War America.

The title has yet to be confirmed and plot details are being kept under wraps, though the film is said to concern a mute woman who falls for an amphibious man being held captive in a laboratory. Shannon would play the villain, joining a cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Stulhbarg.

Shannon can currently be seen on screen in Midnight Special and Elvis & Nixon, and his other upcoming films include Loving and Nocturnal Animals. Del Toro most recently helmed Crimson Peak.

The Wrap first reported the news.
