Prince was always an innovator. As blogger and Prince superfan Anil Dash explained on Twitter Thursday, the late musician’s career was a history of innovation in technology and production as well as music. So perhaps it’s no surprise that Prince was writing songs about Donald Trump long before the latter started dominating political news cycles.
Prince wrote several unbilled songs for other artists, including the 1990 R&B ballad “Donald Trump (Black Version).” Interestingly enough, the song was written for The Time, Morris Day’s band that so memorably opposed Prince in Purple Rain. Listen to it above.
Trump, for his part, tweeted a remembrance of Prince, but did not mention the song.
“I met Prince on numerous occasions,” the Republican candidate wrote Friday. “He was an amazing talent and wonderful guy. He will be greatly missed!”
