After Prince’s death Thursday morning, DJ Premier hit the decks to pay his respects.
“I want to salute one of the greatest, greatest artists in the world to me, and my history of being dope in music, and being very, very respectful of the music genres that I listened to growing up,” said Premier before his impromptu set. “This is a big loss for me. … Prince, we love you. Rest in peace.”

The legendary hip-hop producer ran through hit after hit and went deep into the night, beginning just before midnight in Los Angeles. He started with “Forever in My Life,” graced over “1999” near the middle of the set, and concluded with the appropriate “My Name is Prince.” All the while, Premier’s manager Ian Schwartzman recorded the session on a phone.
“So many f—ing hits, so much history, so many artists that he spawned. And it’s a tragic, tragic loss to get unexpected news like that,” Premier said at the end. “We going to salute you everyday.”
