John C. McGinley is the new sheriff in town. Make that the former sheriff.

The Scrubs alum has signed on to star in the IFC horror comedy Stan Against Evil, which is being written and produced by The Simpsons vet Dana Gould. You’re the Worst‘s Janet Varney, who also voices Korra in the animated series The Legend of Korra, has joined him in the cast as well.

The show, which hits the network this fall with eight episodes, will feature McGinley as Stanley Miller, a malcontented sheriff of a New Hampshire town who loses his job after an outburst at his wife’s funeral. He is recruited, begrudgingly, by the new sheriff, Evie Barret (Varney), to join forces with her to fight a plague of demons that haunt their hamlet.

McGinley, who also will serve as a producer on Stan Against Evil, was recently a series regular on the TBS comedy Ground Floor, ran for two seasons.

Back in February, when IFC announced that it had ordered Stan, the network also said it had picked up the comedy Brockmire, starring Hank Azaria as baseball announcer resuming his career in the minor leagues after a meltdown.
