Hamilton certainly did not throw away its shot. The acclaimed Broadway smash has won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a rare feat for a musical.
It’s the first time a musical has won the Pulitzer for Drama since 2010, when Next to Normal was honored. Before that, Rent brought home the prize in 1996.
The Pulitzer continues an early run of what should be a fruitful awards season for Hamilton. The Lin-Manuel Miranda production won a Grammy in February for Best Musical Theater Album. It will likely be a big winner at June’s Tony Awards; nominations will be announced May 3.
How did Miranda react to the Pulitzer? Well, it was slightly delayed because he was in the studio.
But he soon caught wind and couldn’t find many words to describe his feeling.
