All cheesiness aside, it appears John Oliver’s Yankee Stadium stunt hit quite the home run. With photos of “riffraff” wearing unicorn, dinosaur, Left Shark, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costumes while sitting in the front row behind home plate filtering in all week, the baseball franchise finally reacted.
During the bottom of the seventh inning of the team’s last game before hitting the road Thursday, the jumbotron highlighted that day’s #IHaveNeverSatInAPremiumLocation winners, Nick Turchak and Chris Chestnut, as the Fan Marquee fans of the game and posted the message, “Thanks John Oliver! Everyone is welcome in Yankee Stadium.”
Making “everyone” welcome at the venue was exactly Oliver’s point on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight when he highlighted some statements made by the team’s COO defending a controversial new ticketing policy that essentially said “rich people couldn’t bear to sit next to people who aren’t as rich.” The host then announced he’d be selling some of the priciest seats in the house on Twitter for 25 cents to those who promised to dress (completely ridiculously) for the occasion.
Now that the Yankees have responded in kind, we’re just left to look forward to what Oliver will have to say about it all on Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight on HBO.
