In between leaving The Colbert Report and taking over The Late Show, Stephen Colbert went on a bit of a walkabout. He grew a beard (the “Colbeard”) and even appeared on an episode of The Mindy Project. Colbert had that show’s creator and star, Mindy Kaling, on The Late Show Thursday night, where she claimed he had been unprofessional. As Catholic priest Father Michael O’Donnell, Colbert had to give a eulogy for a fellow priest character. To prove her point, Kaling played a clip of outtakes where Colbert kept laughing and struggling through the take.
“I thought you didn’t handle it that well,” Kaling said. “It’s a very somber occasion.”
Colbert responded with a clip of his own, from a scene where Father Michael talks about Danny’s mysterious girlfriend (who he doesn’t know is Mindy, sitting there with him). In the clip, when Colbert’s character referred to this girlfriend as “pear-shaped with small breasts,” Kaling leapt across the couch and attacked him.
“At no place in the script did it say, ‘Mindy scratches the priest’s eyes out,'” Colbert said.
“Yeah, you’re not supposed to attack your co-stars on my show,” Kaling agreed.
