Obi-Wan Kenobi’s memory isn’t what it used to be. Ewan McGregor stopped by The Graham Norton Show, and revealed he barely remembers anything about his cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
When Norton asked McGregor about his line in the multi-billion dollar blockbuster, the Obi-Wan actor couldn’t quite remember what he says in the movie, when his line comes, and he even struggles to remember the name of the film’s protagonist.
“I don’t remember where I speak, no idea,” McGregor admitted with a laugh. “I think the beginning of the line is… the character’s name is Rey. I’m really struggling here. So they wanted a line of dialogue that said ‘Rey…'”
Obi-Wan’s full line in the film is “Rey… these are your first steps,” which Norton tells him after watching the actor struggle. In McGregor’s defense, he is only in the film “for a second,” as he says, and his cameo was a pretty last-minute addition.
“J.J. Abrams emailed me out of the blue — he got my email address from someone and then emailed me,” McGregor said. “It was about two weeks before the film was released, so it was obviously sort of last minute.”
Another interesting tidbit about the Obi-Wan line is that it’s not only McGregor speaking, but the character’s original actor Alec Guinness as well. Abrams has previously revealed that he edited a soundbite of Guinness, who passed away in 2000, saying the word “afraid” in the original Star Wars trilogy to have him say “Rey” at the beginning of Obi-Wan’s line in The Force Awakens.
“So it’s Alec Guinness saying ‘Rey’ and then me saying that other line,” McGregor said, still drawing a blank.
