Bernie Sanders, Seth Meyers in Ya Bernt segment

Posted on

NBC

“Ya Burnt” has become one of Seth Meyers’ go-to bits, a chance for the witty host to unleash his blistering fury and withering sarcasm on anyone and everyone in the news who’s managed to screw up the world in some way. Since Bernie Sanders has been tagged with “burn”-related puns basically since the beginning of his presidential campaign, it only made sense for Meyers to recruit the candidate for a special segment of “Ya Bernt.”

The bit paired Sanders’ fiery populist rhetoric with Meyers’ witticisms (“Rich, please” ran the chyron at the bottom of the screen) and some favorite Sanders topics like the 1 percent and big banks.

“The 1 percent, what do you need all that money for?” Sanders said. “If I didn’t know any better I’d think you were trying to compensate for something. How is it possible that some of you are paying a lower tax rate than your secretaries? That makes less sense than the plot of Batman v Superman. 1 percent, ya Bernt.”

After savaging his usual opponents in the financial industry, Sanders turned to Meyers — particularly, all of Meyers’ jokes about his unkempt hair. To fight back, a photo was unearthed of Meyers on a particularly bad hair day.

“Seth, why don’t you look in the mirror, Tintin? You’re carrying more product than an Amazon warehouse. And why does it come to a point like that? It looks like a tiny surfer is about to hang 10 on your forehead. Seth Meyers, Ya Bernt!”
