Much to the dismay of Gilmore Girls fans, all indications are that Melissa McCarthy’s Sookie won’t return to Stars Hollow for Netflix’s upcoming revival series. Unless, that is, there’s a secret cameo in the works?
PEOPLE and EW editorial director Jess Cagle recently floated that theory to McCarthy herself in the latest edition of The Jess Cagle Interview. “I think it’s all just a ruse,” he said, “and we’re going to be surprised that Sookie is showing up on Gilmore Girls.”
McCarthy’s response was not exactly reassuring. “I would be very surprised if that happens,” she said with a laugh.
The actress and comedian, who’s currently promoting her new film The Boss, added that she fully supports the revival but didn’t have room in her own schedule to participate.
“I’m excited they’re doing that,” McCarthy said. “I think it’s great. I get more questions about Gilmore than anything else. The fan base is so remarkable to me, and I’m really proud of that show. I actually am excited for my girls, when they’re a little older, to start watching that. I think it was a really great show, and I love that those characters are going to come back. It just, timing-wise, was not right.”
Gilmore Girls will return to Netflix this year, with four 90-minute movies that reunite stars Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, and many other familiar faces. Amy Sherman-Palladino is back as well, to shepherd the show back into fans’ lives.
“I love that they’re doing movies instead of a new series. I think every way they’re doing it is very cool,” McCarthy said.
The Boss, directed by McCarthy’s husband Ben Falcone and starring McCarthy, Kristen Bell, and Peter Dinklage, opens Friday.
