After months of back and forth about whether Melissa McCarthy will reprise her role as Sookie in Netflix’s upcoming Gilmore Girls revival, EW has confirmed the Dragonfly Inn’s chef — not to mention Lorelai’s best friend — will return. McCarthy herself went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to make the announcement.
“There has something I’ve been asked about so, so many times, and it hasn’t worked out. They’re making four new movies of the Gilmore Girls, which is a show that was near and dear to my heart for four years, and we could not get those schedules to work,” McCarthy told DeGeneres. “There was a whole thing, and then I was going to be out of the country, and literally about an hour and a half ago, we figured out that I’m going to go back and do it, and I am so excited! They’re going to be amazing.”
After the Gilmore Girls revival was announced in January, McCarthy wrote on Twitter that she wasn’t asked back to the show. “[S]adly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!” she wrote in early February.
But speaking to EW as part of our exclusive first look at the Gilmore Girls return, Sherman-Palladino clarified that there was no hard feelings between her and McCarthy. “I’ve been told by her people for months, ‘Can’t happen. Can’t happen. Can’t happen,'” Sherman-Palladino said. “There’s nothing juicy or hidden here. It’s a matter of she’s one of the top working actresses in films today, and we are very proud of her.”

During the interview, Sherman-Palladino added that Gilmore Girls was shooting until May 10, so McCarthy had time to show up if all things worked out. “I know what the scene is. I’ll pre-light it for her. She can drive up, run in, shoot it, and run out,” she said. “I can get her in and out in two hours. If she finds that time, I don’t care when it is, we will make it happen.”
And now, they really will.
