The trailer for the Star Wars stand-alone film Rogue One will arrive Thursday morning on Good Morning America.

As part of the announcement, Lucasfilm released this glimpse of a new kind of stormtrooper, with iron-black armor and what looks like a flaming moisture farm vaporator in the background.

The film, which is set just before the events depicted in 1977’s original Star Wars, chronicles the Rebel effort to steal the Empire’s plans for the first Death Star.

Felicity Jones, an Oscar nominee for The Theory of Everything, plays the lead in the movie, which also costars Diego Luna (Milk, Killing Them Softly); Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline); Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler); Mads Mikkelsen (NBC’s Hannibal); Hong Kong action star and martial artist Donnie Yen; Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly); Riz Ahmed (Four Lions, Nightcrawler), and Alan Tudyk (a veteran of another space war in Firefly and its big-screen spin-off Serenity), who will give life to a motion-capture character.

A year ago, Lucasfilm previewed a different teaser at the Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, California, with director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) mocking up footage of a lush planet, with TIE Fighters screaming over the treetops and into a blue sky, where the dim but unmistakable shape of the Death Star hung in orbit. That was no moon.

Then in August, at Disney’s D23 Expo, the full cast of the movie was revealed, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy offered a bit more description.

Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” she said in a statement. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know.”

We’ll get a better sense of what that means tomorrow morning.
