Fans of Girls and Smash will want to start planning trips to Broadway later this year. Andrew Rannells and Christian Borle will star in the upcoming revival of the 1992 Tony-winning musical Falsettos, set to open this fall.
Set in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Falsettos tells the story of a gay man who has left his wife but wants to remain a close-knit family with her, their son, and his new lover. Borle has been cast in the lead role of Marvin, while Rannells will play his new lover Whizzer, and Tony-nominated actress Stephanie J. Block will play Marvin’s ex-wife Trina.
While familiar for their television roles, both Borle and Rannells have found considerable success on Broadway, especially in recent years. Rannells originated the role of Elder Price in 2011’s The Book of Mormon and has gone on to take over roles in two of the biggest musicals of the past few years: Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Hamilton. For his part, Borle recently capped off nearly two decades on Broadway by winning the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his role in Something Rotten!.
Falsettos will open at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Oct. 27, with previews beginning on Sept. 29.
