Cuyler Smith illustrates trading cards for Friday Night Lights, Sandlot, Karate Kid

Posted on

Film buffs could probably tell you more about Shane Falco and Scotty Smalls than Johnny Unitas and Mickey Mantle. Now, there’s a new set of trading cards that pay homage to the fictional sports heroes of the big and small screens.

Artist Cuyler Smith created the faux baseball, football, and hockey cards immortalizing pop culture athletes like Henry Rowengartner (Rookie of the Year), Daniel LaRusso (The Karate Kid), Willie Beamen (Any Given Sunday), TV’s Al Bundy (Married… With Children), and La Flama Blanca himself, Kenny Powers (Eastbound & Down). Benny, Squints, and Smalls of The Sandlot were featured, as well as Coach Taylor (Friday Night Lights) and Forrest Gump.

Smith’s collection was on display at the Los Angeles art gallery Gallery1988 through Saturday. Several pieces are still on sale, though some are sold out, such as Karate Kid villain Johnny Lawrence (perhaps purchased by Barney Stinson).
