Ewan McGregor plays Jesus in Last Days in the Desert trailer

New clip arrives for Rodrigo Garcia-directed film shot by three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki

Ewan McGregor explores his good and evil sides in the new trailer for Last Days in the Desert, taking on dual roles as both Jesus and the Devil in Rodrigo Garcia’s latest film.

Last Days in the Desert tells the fantastical story of Jesus’ 40-day journey through the desert as he grapples with earthly conflicts, including the fate of a crisis-stricken family. The film features supporting performances from Ciarán Hinds, Tye Sheridan, and Ayelet Zurer. Emmanuel Lubezki, who won his third consecutive Best Cinematography Oscar in February, shot the film.

“I don’t see it as a faith-based film,” McGregor told EW last year. “It’s not telling a Biblical story. I think it’s a film about fathers and sons. Jesus and God are the ultimate father and son relationship.”

Following its premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Last Days in the Desert was acquired by Broad Green Pictures, the distributor behind Sarah Silverman’s 2015 awards season campaign that earned the comedienne a SAG nomination for her performance in the indie drama I Smile Back.

Broad Green later took the film to the AFI Festival last fall, where it received strong critical reviews. The distributor will release Last Days in the Desert on May 13.
