Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Rachel Bloom sorts characters into Hogwarts houses

It’s a lot more nuanced than that

Here at EW, we are big fans of speculating which Hogwarts house people might be sorted into, and, apparently, so is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator and star Rachel Bloom. She picked up her Sorting Hat Wednesday morning and tweeted which of the four Hogwarts houses the main characters of her show would belong to.

Of course, the broody, logical Greg (Santino Fontana) and perceptive psych student Heather (Vella Lovell) would fall in with the brainy Ravenclaws. Meanwhile, our heroine Rebecca (Bloom), who bravely decides to follow her heart, and her boss, Darryl (Pete Gardner), who recently showed his bravery by coming out as bisexual, would be courageous Gryffindors.

Where it gets interesting is with the Slytherins and Hufflepuffs of West Covina. You might think that Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz), Josh’s cold and somewhat conniving current girlfriend, would be a Slytherin, but as Rebecca herself would say, it’s a lot more nuanced than that. Bloom sorts both Valencia and love interest Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) into the Hufflepuff house, shining a light on their loyalty.

Perhaps most surprising upon initial glance is Bloom sorting Rebecca’s BFF Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) into the famously villainous Slytherin house. Although many Harry Potter characters in the Slytherin house were shown to be villains, that definitely doesn’t mean Paula is evil. The Slytherin label actually fits Paula well — she shows her cunning by always coming up with intricate plans to get Josh and Rebecca together (remember that in-depth plan she came up with to trick them into a Mexican restaurant date night?) and her ambition when she runs the law office with an iron fist.
