A24 has acquired distribution rights to Free Fire, an action-thriller starring recent Oscar winner Brie Larson, it was announced Thursday.
The film, which also stars Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Sam Riley, Noah Taylor, and Sharlto Copley, revolves around a woman’s fight for survival after an arms deal she facilitates between two Irishmen and a gang turns deadly. U.K. filmmaker Ben Wheatley, whose adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s novel High-Rise hits the Tribeca Film Festival in April, is directing. Martin Scorsese is an executive producer on the project.
“We’re thrilled to be working on Free Fire — Ben Wheatley is one of the most exciting and innovative filmmakers out there, and we have no doubt he will brilliantly orchestrate this story’s electrifying mayhem,” A24 said in a press release. “This promises to be both one of the most accomplished and one of the most fun movies of the next year, and we’re excited to bring it to a wide audience.”
A24 recently mounted a successful Oscar campaign for Larson, whose turn as Ma in Lenny Abrahamson’s Room earned the actress her first Academy Award in February. The distributor’s Amy Winehouse documentary, Amy, also nabbed the Best Documentary Oscar at the ceremony. A24’s latest theatrical release, Robert Eggers’ period horror film The Witch, grossed $8.8 million in its opening weekend after being acquired for $1.5 million at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
A release date for Free Fire has not yet been announced.
