Hamilton fans everywhere just got their shot at seeing the Broadway smash rise up and perform at the Grammy Awards.

Creator-star Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of the hit musical performed the show’s opening number, “Alexander Hamilton,” via satellite from the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City during Monday night’s ceremony. Stephen Colbert introduced the segment.

This marks the first time a Broadway show’s performance was broadcast at the Grammys via satellite, and gave those who haven’t yet been able to score a coveted ticket a chance to see the groundbreaking musical in action.

The opening number essentially encapsulates the show ahead, using spoken and sung verses to tell the story of the founding father and first treasury secretary. Miranda plays Hamilton, while Leslie Odom Jr. plays his friend-turned-rival (and eventual duel partner), Aaron Burr. The cast also includes Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Anthony Ramos, and Okieriete Onaodowan.

Hamilton has been lauded (and earned a growing group of celebrity fans) for its innovative way of retelling history, which includes a musically diverse score that spans hip-hop, R&B, pop, and traditional show tunes. Its soundtrack later won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater album.

“It’s a story of someone who rises and falls on the strength of their facility with words,” Miranda said in a Grammy nominee interview. “So to me, this was a hip-hop story. The fun for me in reading the rest of [Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton biography, which served as the show’s inspiration] was assigning musical styles to each of the different characters.”

While Hamilton, like most Broadway shows, does not perform on Monday nights, a lucky live audience was in the theater for the Grammys performance.
