Archie TV series Riverdale casts Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Lili Reinhart as Betty

Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart have been tapped to co-lead the CW project; Archie and Veronica have yet to be cast

Riverdale, the forthcoming CW pilot based on the world of Archie Comics, has cast two of its most recognizable characters.

Cole Sprouse, best known as one half of the Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, will play Archie’s lazy, gluttonous friend Jughead Jones. Lili Reinhart, recently of Surviving Jack and The Kings of Summer, will play girl next door Betty Cooper, who in the comics is classically portrayed as having an unrequited crush on Archie.

Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are executive-producing the pilot along with its writer, Archie Comics CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Supergirl, Looking), as well as Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater.

Set in the present, Riverdale is “a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.”

The CW ordered Riverdale to pilot at the end of January along with five other shows.
