Jet Li cast with Vin Diesel in xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage

  • Jet Li is squaring off against Vin Diesel in xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage. The martial artist and Expendables vet will lead up a gang that will fight Diesel’s; however, he might not be the ultimate bad guy in D.J. Caruso‘s revival of the 2000s action movie series. Samuel L. Jackson, Nina Dobrev, and Ruby Rose also star in the film, from a screenplay by F. Scott Frazier. Filming begins next month in Toronto and the Dominican Republic. [The Hollywood Reporter]
  • Kevin Spacey has joined Rebel in the Rye, about Catcher in the Rye​ author J.D Salinger (Nicholas Hoult). From Empire executive producer Danny Strong — who’s writing and directing — the film centers on Salinger in his formative years. Spacey will play Whit Burnett, a Columbia University professor, an editor of a magazine, and a major influence on Salinger. Strong’s script was adapted from J.D.   • The Comedian with Robert De Niro has re-cast its female lead. Leslie Mann steps in after Jennifer Aniston departed due to a scheduling conflict. The movie, helmed by Taylor Hackford, tracks an aging, bitter comedian (De Niro) who meets a woman (Mann) at a wedding and develops a relationship with her. Shooting on Art Linson‘s screenplay begins soon in New York. [Variety]
  • The Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me adds Grace Gibson. The Black Nativity actress will play Faith Evans, the singer and former wife of The Notorious B.I.G, a friend-turned-foe of Shakur (Demetrius Shipp Jr.). Kat Graham and Danai Gurira also star in Benny Boom‘s project, based on a script by Jeremy Haft and Ed Gonzalez. [Deadline]
  • Keegan-Michael Key jumps aboard Why Him? along with Bryan Cranston, James Franco, and Zoey Deutch. The comedy centers on a father (Cranston) who visits his daughter (Deutch) at college, finding himself in competition with her new, smarmy, tech-billionaire boyfriend (Franco). The former star of sketch show Key & Peele will play Franco’s butler and estate manager. John Hamburg directs, and filming commences in Los Angeles in February. [The Hollywood Reporter]
  • Bella Thorne, meet Madea. The Shake It Up! actress has joined Boo! A Madea Halloween from writer, director, producer, and star Tyler Perry. Cassi Davis (House of Payne), Patrice Lovely (Love Thy Neighbor), and Andre Hall (Far) also join the latest Madea adventure, in which Perry’s titular character battles killers, monsters, and misbehaving teens alike on Halloween.   • Ruth Wilson (The Affair), Bob Balaban (The Grand Budapest Hotel), and Lucy Boynton (Saving Mr. Banks) are fronting I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Writer-director Osgood Perkins‘ (February) newest project tells the story of a young nurse (Wilson) caring for an old mystery writer who lives in an eerie retirement home. Shooting begins Feb. 16 in Ottawa.
  • Charlie Plummer is joining The Dinnerbased on Herman Koch‘s 2009 Dutch novel about two brothers coping with a violent crime committed by their teenage sons. The King Jack actor joins Steve CooganLaura LinneyRichard Gere, and Rebecca Hall. Oren Moverman (The Messenger) directs. [Variety]
