Don McLean, the 70-year-old musician known for the 1971 song “American Pie,” was arrested early Monday at his residence in Camden, Maine on a charge of misdemeanor domestic violence, EW confirms.
Knox County Jail’s Sgt. Elmer Sweetland confirms to EW that McLean spent several hours in the facility and was released Monday morning on bail. He will appear in Knox County Unified Court on Feb. 22.
“He’s not the first celebrity we’ve dealt with and he won’t be the last,” Corporal Bradley Woll told PEOPLE.
McLean has tour dates scheduled in the U.S. and Australia through April, and is due to perform next at Chicago’s City Winery on Jan. 27.
