Golden Globes: Carol, Outlander lead contenders in Twitter chatter

If a room full of monkeys banging on typewriters for an infinite amount of time would eventually reproduce the works of Shakespeare, what are the chances that the whole of Twitter, cranking out 140 characters at a time, might predict the winners of the Golden Globes?

We’re no mathematicians, but we may soon have an answer because Twitter has announced the five most tweeted-about films and television shows vying for gold at this Sunday’s ceremony.

Carol, the lesbian romance starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, has the most mentions on the film side, while Outlander, the time-traveling historical drama starring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, leads among TV series.

To calculate its rankings, Twitter tallied tweets that mentioned nominated movies and TV series alongside terms relating to the Globes. Tweets were only counted between Dec. 10, when nominations were announced, and Jan. 6.

Rounding out the top five movies were The Revenant, The Danish Girl, Spotlight, and Joy. For TV, spots 2-5 went to American Horror Story: Hotel, Game of Thrones, Empire, and Orange Is the New Black.
