TY Dolla $ign first broke out in 2010 via YG’s cultishly popular “Toot It and Boot It,” which he wrote and while he’s appeared on a string of high profile tunes in the time since, his debut album, Free TC, just dropped this fall. The wait was worth it — the collection is inventive and exciting. (EW’s Kyle Anderson wrote in his review, “Ty has enough charm to carry bedroom jams, Cadillac bangers, and folk-funk experiments all at once.”)
“I’m just a lover of sounds,” Ty (born Tyrone William Griffin, Jr.) tells EW on a visit to our studio. “And I like finding new sounds and putting them together and, like, making songs. That’s just my passion; that’s my joy.”
Now, EW is excited to premiere a laid-back version of his track “Solid,” which he wrote with Babyface, performed as part of our Basement Series. The song, he says, is about “being straight wherever I’m at. You know, I’ve been good to a lot of people so wherever I’m at, I’m good.” Check out his performance above.
