With the exception of maybe Harrison Ford, the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has done a pretty great job at keeping the film’s ultra-secretive plot under wraps. But is that commitment to mystery hard on the actors? Not according to Lupita Nyong’o.
The Oscar-winning actress plays Maz Kanata in the new film, a motion-capture creature only briefly seen in the Star Wars marketing thus far. Asked by Robin Roberts during an interview with Good Morning America on Friday if maintaining secrecy was difficult, Nyong’o said no. “Really easy. You just don’t say anything.”
As revealed by EW, Kanata’s eyes have powers that separate her in the Star Wars universe. Not that Nyong’o is talking: “The eyes are important to this character,” she said to Roberts without elaborating further.
One thing Nyong’o was able to discuss: her attachment to Star Wars. “I grew up watching Star Wars. It came on TV when we weren’t in school, on public holidays,” she said. “We only had two channels in Kenya growing up, so everyone watched Star Wars.”
