Trevor Noah is no fan of Ted Cruz.
Hours after 14 people were killed in a mass shooting at a San Bernardino social services center, Cruz announced plans to participate in a rally to support the 2nd amendment and “the rights of Americans to keep and bear arms.”
“Yeah, 14 people just lost their lives in a shooting, and Ted Cruz’s first thought is, ‘Oh, that reminds me, got to send out my invites to my gun party,'” Noah said on Thursday’s episode of The Daily Show. “Yeah, that seems like something you’d only do if you were an a–hole.”
To underscore his point, Noah went on to discuss how many Republicans and Democrats dislike Cruz and his political rhetoric. “Maybe Ted Cruz is the leader that America needs,” Noah joked. “He’s the first person in recent memory who’s been able to unite people of both parties in their hatred of him. And maybe, just maybe for that reason, we might all grow to love him… but probably not.”
Since becoming host of The Daily Show, Noah has reported on gun violence in America with frequency. In October, following a mass shooting at an Oregon community college, Noah and correspondent Jessica Williams mocked the cyclical nature of the media response to gun attacks.
“I’m sick of having to do my job, when our leaders won’t do theirs,” Williams said, before discussing “our five stages of mass-shooting grief.”
“Stage 1 is the shooting; Stage 2 is national mourning; 3, president cries at podium; 4, a weekend of half-assed gun control debate in the media; and then finally we all go back to keeping up with the Kardashians,” Williams said.
